When moving an object on your own, you first need to make sure you cannot move it easier with a lifting aid, with help or do you need to move it at all. Follow the correct lifting techniques to reduce your risks and avoid twisting while lifting the load. Before you move it, make sure your path is clear and you know where it is going and how you are going to put it down.

Box on the floor, I want to make sure that I pick it up using the safe manual handling principles. But before I do that, I need to make sure that it is actually within my own capability of being lifted, so I need to find out how heavy it is. It might actually say on the box the weight of the box, but maybe somebody has tampered with it and put something else in. So ideally, you can either kick it with your feet just gently and if it moves, you are getting a quite good idea of the weight of it. Or you can come down and you could just have a little try of lifting. Yes, it is well within my capability.

The safe principles of manual handling is to bend your knees, keep your spine in line, and then we want to lift the box, make sure that we have got a good grip on it, and bring that box in close to the body. Okay, so that is what we are going to do. I am just going to lift it from underneath, I get a good grip, bring the load in close. And then I am going to lift the box using my thigh muscles and not my back muscles, so it is ready, steady, lift. So now we are ready to put the box down, and we do the same principles again. We will keep the box close, we make sure that we have got a good grip on it, we keep our spine in line, bend our knees, and then slowly put the box down.

We have already discussed and demonstrated the correct way of safe moving and handling of an inanimate object, and we thought the best way to describe the wrong way is by using this model. So this model wants to put down this object onto the floor. The wrong way would be to not bend your knees and to bend your back. And I do not know if you can see on the model that it is sort of putting a lot of strain on the... Especially on the lumbar vertebrae and the intervertebral discs. So that is really quite strenuous and quite awkward, really, for the lifter. Ideally, you wanna bend your knees, keep your back straight, and put it down like that. There we go. Not like that. And twisting as well.
