The Manual Handling Regulation 1992 is the most important within the Health & Safety Act.

The first statement in the regulation is to avoid heavy lifting where its reasonably practical, asking the patient to do as much as they can or bringing in specialist equipment can do this.
If lifting is needed a Manual handling risk assessment is needed and needs to be done by a trained specialist.

The risk assessment needs to be reviewed, there is no time limit but it should be reviewed regularly to make sure its up to date.

The management of health and safety regulations states that an employers needs to provide risk assessment not just for the person being moved but the people moving the patient. Adequate training should also be provided.
