That not everything you need to move is a nice square box. So there are other things, for example, here's and what we are classifying in this video as an odd-shaped object. But an odd-shaped object could be a chair, it could be a hoist used in moving people, it could be any item, which is in awkward shape. Wheelbarrow or something like that, so all these items have their unique characteristics. So what you need to do is find out more about the item you want to move and how you are going to move it. The first thing is, is can you move it in other ways. For example, this is a gate section, a fence, we have used by our main roller shutter doors.

Now, the problem with something like this is, if you do move it, it expands. So it could well be that you start moving and it suddenly it stretches wide, but the first thing is, this particular item is on wheels. So where you can always move it using the wheels because this way we can just push it along. It's much easier than physically lifting it. But if you had to lift something like this up the stairs or onto another layer, then you need to decide, is it something that you can do on your own, or is it something you need help with. The problem with something like this is if you are lifting it up, you do not want it to pull out and there are lots of awkward bits to it, and also you need to know roughly the sort of centre of gravity because when you do pick it up, how is it can physically move. So the first thing you are going to be doing is doing a sort of risk assessment and working out what ways it could cause a potential injury and also plan the route that you are going to be doing. So if you are moving from A to B, we need to make sure how we are going to be moving it over that period, it may well be, we just push it along on its wheels in this example, up to where there is a step when we get to the step, then we need to lift it up.

And maybe the best thing to do with this would be to move it in pairs. It is quite heavy, there's no absolute weight on it, but it's metal. Things you can do to secure the load to start with, maybe in this example, it may be, you put a strap around to stop it actually opening up because if it is opened up and your finger's caught, you can very easily hurt yourself on that as well. So the first thing may be to just to secure it. If you are moving it and you want to, this particular one's got breaks on the wheels, so you can just lock it in place. So when you do move it, it's relatively easy to secure it to the floor.

So decide between yourself and the person you are lifting with, how you are going to physically move it. It may be, it's easy lifting it up this way, so we are just lifting a little bit off the floor, or maybe we need to pull it fully into a horizontal position, but if we do that, then the foot end has got a lot more weight to it than the top end. So we then need to make sure that we keep the nice and level. So whatever the item is, look and think about how it's going to react and also plan it, so when we do make the move, we also know that we can stop the move at any time, should be something realized what we have planned is not quite the way it's absolutely moving. So something like this is, I would say the best thing here is to secure it, to start with, stop it opening up because that could be really difficult. Wheel it wherever possible. Is there any other way we could move it, maybe this, as you can move on a sack truck or you may just lower it down onto a flatbed trolley, that might be an easy way of moving it, but if you did need to pick it up, assess the best way of doing it, communicate with the person you are lifting it with, and then move it and place it down into the safe position once you have finished.
